Welcome to Somatic Conditioning™

When we move in a way that our body is designed to move we can expect to be flexible and strong, free of stiffness and tightness. Just like animals, babies and most children. They don’t feel stiff and they don’t have to go to a fitness class. They move ! And when they move they use their whole body. When an arm reaches out, the rest of the body automatically reorganizes and realigns itself. When they arch backwards, their abdomen releases to lengthen even further. When they twist their head to the right, their hips counter-rotate to the left. That is the way we are designed to move and the body loves it when you start moving that way !

Somatic Conditioning, freedom of movement patterns, flexibility training, increasing strength

‘Somatic Conditioning’ is an exercise program that is developed to stimulate especially those fundamental movement patterns we all need to embody to create health and balance within our system. This conditioning program is very beneficial in further developing (core)strength, agility, flexibility and most important ‘efficiency’ within your system. By moving your body in functional, fluid and effortless patterns you will condition the intelligence between your eyes, your brain and all your muscles. Just like everybody else, your body needs to be able to fully lengthen as well as to fully shorten. At the right moment, with the right force. ‘Somatic Conditioning’ will increase your athletic performance, increase your stride, increase your balance & co-ordination and increase your feeling of well-being. The likelihood of traumatic injuries or overuse injuries will diminish drastically. Enjoy your freedom of movement and don’t forget when you are exercising: the body craves ‘organic’ patterns !

Testimonials

Like most people who are trying to be fit these days, I spend anywhere from 1-2 hours 4 to 5 days a week in the gym. I have tried all sorts of classes such as yoga, Pilates, aerobic conditioning, step, and anything else the gym could provide. Although all classes had their benefits, no class had me walking away wanting more. As far as I was concerned, it was an effort just convincing myself to go to many of them. However, a couple of weeks ago, I started taking the Somatic Conditioning class with Servaas in Napa. I was amazed at how wonderful I felt afterwards. It was unlike any other class I ever had, and I walked away relaxed and happy. I go to work the following day just feeling better and my body knows it. Now I find myself staying late at work waiting for the Somatic Conditioning class later that evening. I highly recommend this class for everyone.

I found participating in Servaas' ‘Somatic Conditioning’ program to be a wake up call. An awakening of my mind and body working together to achieve movement patterns long forgotten. A wonderful program for people to take charge and continually improve.

Experiencing Somatic Awareness via Servaas' teachings has sparked a deeper level of understanding of our innate ability as humans to understand the power of true health and healing in our bodies via movement awareness. Somatics / Somatic Conditioning is a very powerful tool and is truly a pioneering body of work in the realm of mind/body awareness... As a new mom, Servaas also taught me the fine tuning of rehabbing the post-pregnancy body with Somatics: extremely helpful !"

Servaas gave me the opportunity to learn about Somatics 5 years ago. I was 43 years of age and had been suffering from some major back hip and leg pain for a very long time. I had been very aggressive in trying to fix my problems but nothing I did would last more than a few hours and believe me: I tried everything ! Some friends and a therapist of mine had been suggesting I go see Servaas. I was reluctant but went. Best thing I ever did for my health !

Through Somatic Rehabilitation I was immediately able to start to reverse my health from poor with limited mobility to excellent with more mobility. In total I had 5 sessions with Servaas, 1.5hrs each session. The relief I got was immediate and lasted longer and longer each day. I achieved this by myself by consistently performing the techniques that Servaas had taught me. They are simple and very effective. Very easy to learn and easy to implement at home, at work, in the car, during sporting activities etc.

I had gotten myself into my unhealthy situation through over-use, compensating, and stress. Improper rehab when I did get injured, and on and on. I was to blame for my poor state of affairs. Over the years I had programmed myself into poor posture, a very painful back, sore hips, you name it: I really didn’t feel very good anywhere. Therefore it made sense to me that nobody else but ‘myself’ could get me out of this painful and unhealthy state. Massage, pills and conventional exercises worked for a short time only: they never lasted. Servaas gave me the tools to de-program my bad habits. Permanently !

5 years later I am now a fitness nut. As a fitness fanatic I am deeply involved in Iyengar Yoga, weight training , aerobic classes , equestrian sport, triathlon and a number of other physical and mental activities. I am always on the lookout for exercises that will enhance my performance, my alignment, my enjoyment and my general well being. Recently I attended a Somatic Conditioning class taught by the same Somatics guy that helped me so much in the past (Servaas). I immediately felt how the Somatic Conditioning movement patterns enhanced my basic and advanced activities. As well, I found Somatic Conditioning to be very effective in strengthening and lengthening large and small muscle groups which I could not effectively condition through my other activities. I believe anyone can benefit from this program and it will definitely take you to the next level in your chosen activity. Be it walking, running, jumping or standing still.
